Gene,

I agree! Japan is now an entire country of newly-minted realists including the Prime Minister who announced last week that the country will not be expanding its nuclear program and will instead move in a direction of renewable energy sources.

Dear Realist, WTF UP you are not living in reality. Asked the people of Japan what reality looks like. Sorry that’s as nice as I can be about it.

In response to Rick’s email,

Terminology can be demeaning and even discouraging when it is used incorrectly.

The so called “Idealists” are actually the ones dealing with reality by asking only for a simplified and decentralized power-grid using clean technologies that do not threaten our health and our lives with contamination so insidious that it is impossible to manage.

The so called “Realists” (nuclear power proponents) on the other hand, want to build multi-billion dollar machines, with monies usurped from an unknowing public, using technologies that they can not control, with consequences that are systematically dismantling every life form on the planet. These so called “Realist” reassure us that we can live “happily ever after” with their monstrous nuclear machines teetering on the brink of disaster in our backyards. That, to me, sounds like the imagination of an actual “Idealist”.

To keep the issue clear and simple, whether bank or energy company, Edison International, the California Public Utilities Commission, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, are comprised of people just like you and me. Multi-national corporations are guided by boards of directors who are people just like you and me. Governments and even hugely oppressive autocratic regimes consist of people just like you and me. These people on the boards of directors or who head the regulatory agencies may not see themselves as potential victims of a nuclear catastrophe, but they are, and that is our job to bring that “reality” to light.

We should never forget that we are first and foremost citizens, not merely consumers, and that we can wield influence over these boards of directors by publicly voicing our outrage at their decisions. The unfolding Fukushima nightmare has done most of the hard work (public awareness) for us. It revealed to the kingdom that the emperor is wearing no clothes.

Perhaps the most important thing now is to illuminate “the truth” to the broadest audience possible. That is now a possible “reality” with the help of Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube and perhaps later, a 10 minute documentary video that can go viral. We need to train ourselves how to take full advantage of these practically-free social media and help change our present nuclear “reality”.

Anyone want to interpret this for me? Sounds like this is a Bank not an Energy Company.

Dear Idealist

I always wanted to be an idealist and at one time in my life I may have started out that way. However over the years I have become a realist and believe in picking the battles I can win with the end goal of winning the war. So much for philosophy I respect what you are trying to do however your adversary is the Federal Government not SCE. Southern California Edison is part of a conglomerate called Edison International (EIX) which also has Mission Energy and Edison Finance. SCE is regulated by the CPUC and is a public Utility. SCE makes its money on capital investment such as power transmission lines, building new power plants including solar wind and coal , installing new major capital equipment , reactor heads , steam generators , cooling towers ? tusamani walls ? etc. The money SCE uses to pay for Operations and maintenance (O&M) is requested by SCE in the Rate Case submitted to the CPUC . O&M covers wages , utilities , leasing , rentals , parts under $5k ,office supplies , computers , etc. If SCE does not spend all of its O&M money before the end of the fiscal year it must return it to the rate payers. So there is to types of money Capital and O&M . Say SCE needed a needed cooling towers at SONGS. They would submit a rate case to the CPUC for 1 billion dollars ? borrow the money at 5% and charge the CPUC 12% ? for say thirty years. The CPUC would vote to raise the price of electricity say 2 cents and the ratepayers would pay for it. I am not sure but I believe SONGS is paid for and is owned by the ratepayers except for the new capital expenses i.e reactor heads , security upgrades, steam generators etc. SCE can not lose money it just passes the costs on to the ratepayer. If SONGS lost money it would give the Utility back to the CPUC ? SONGS does not make money for making electricity other then the incentives given to them for percentage of capacity by the CPUC.

Rick or Mike,

Can you please explain the relationship between the two entities of the company again. As I remember it, one arm is requesting certain expensive costs be passed on to the consumer while the other arm lends the state the money to get that work accomplished. The point being that they don’t care about the electricity being profitable. They make all their money on lending. Is that right, and what are the two divisions called?

Gary
